Belarus citizen who fought for separatist republic jailed for 2 years


On May 4, Mahiliou Regional Court delivered a guilty verdict to a resident of the town of Kruhlaye for committing a crime under Part 1 st.361-3 of the Criminal Code, the Belarusian Supreme Court reports.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant had repeatedly entered the Ukrainian territory through Russian checkpoints.

The man was enrolled as a military and provided with arms, ammunition and uniforms of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic. Also, he had a certificate from the military unit.

“The defendant Y. took part in the armed conflict with the Armed Forces of Ukraine: he equipped fighting positions, conducted attacks on positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine using the military arms he was given; as part of a squad, he was sent to the demarcation to adjust and apply fire on enemy positions; he sprayed the targets,” the statement reads.

The man was sentenced to 2 years in a minimum-security penal colony.

It is highly likely that the convict is Ivan Yaravy (call sign “Pushkin). In October 2015, Yaravy was arrested in Orsha, but a week later he was warned against mercenarism and released from prison. However, the militant continued fighting on the side of Russian-backed separatists.
