Son of COVID-19 victim accuses Lukashenka of her death

A Belarusian-born resident of France, whose mother allegedly died of the novel coronavirus, demands a criminal case be opened against Alyaksandr Lukashenka. In his opinion, the Belarusian leader failed to take appropriate action amid the outbreak of COVID-19.

Lidziya, Alyaksandr Matsveyeu’s mother, was admitted in a hospital in the Belarusian city of Vitsebsk, where the 68-year-old woman had a non-cancerous spinal tumor removed.

“Two days later, she started coughing, she had fever. Her diagnosis was changed three times,” the man told Belsat. The doctors suggested Lidziya Matsveyeva had severe pneumonia.

“She was transferred to the intensive care unit and put on a lung ventilator. On April 2, she died. We did not receive any official comments from the hospital; we could not reach them on the phone. We got information about her condition and death from the doctors we know. The coronavirus was diagnosed [when the body was] in the morgue,” says another relative of Lidziya Matsveyeva.

Mention of coronavirus in death certificate

According to Alyaksandr Matsveyeu, his mother’s case was not included in the list of coronavirus deaths. The man reported the case to the police. According to him, a crime took place, and it is the head of state who is to blame.

“I demand the initiation of criminal proceedings against Alyaksander Lukashenka, who, acting as the President of Belarus, did not introduce necessary measures to protect the population from the spread of the virus,” he said in a statement.

On April 6, the Health Ministry reported that the number of the infected with COVID-19 totalled to 700 in Belarus; 13 persons died of it.

Over the past month, Alyaksandr Lukashenka has gained notoriety for his careless attitude to the pandemic of COVID-19.

On March 16, he shared with the newly appointed officials his own ways of fighting infections, including the novel coronavirus. He advised going to a dry sauna, claiming that the virus dies at 60 degrees; more frequent handwashing, regular diet, and… drinking some vodka are also on his list. Later, he called the situation ‘psychosis and foolishness’.

On April 3, Lukashenka said that the introduction of tough quarantine measures and placing a curfew would not improve the coronavirus situation in Belarus. Previously, the Belarusian leader promised that despite the coronavirus, no festivities on the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War would be canceled. With hundreds of fans in the stands, sports competitions were held.

As reported earlier, the Belarusian Council of Ministers is taking measures to prevent and spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Belarus. In particular, the government bound the arrivals from abroad to self-isolate for 14 days. At the same time, the Health Ministry is still refraining from recommendations to impose quarantine measures on educational institutions due to ‘inexpedience’. However, the spring school holidays have been extended for a week in the country.
