The head of Belarus has held a working meeting with the Chairman of the Supreme Court Valyantsin Sukala, BelTA informs. During the meeting, among other things, they discussed the issue of changing the Constitution of Belarus.
“Therefore, I believe that, despite the fact that we have a somewhat authoritarian system for organizing public life, nevertheless, the President protects the courts. But this is a personal aspect, and it is necessary to make sure that the system works, not tied to individuals, including Lukashenka,” the head of state said.
Lukashenka has urged Sukala to make proposals and join the work on changing the Constitution. In Belarus, the basic law was changed in 1996 and 2004.
Also, the issue of changes to the Belarusian Constitution was commented on in Moscow.
Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov did not rule out the possibility that Russia will share with Belarus its experience in amending the Constitution, if Minsk asks Moscow to do so, Interfax reports.
Lukashenka announced amendments to the Constitution of Belarus at the beginning of 2019. Potential presidential candidate Viktar Babaryka called for a referendum on the return of the 1994 Constitution back in the summer.
