Opposition activist Statkevich detained and charged


Belarusian politician Mikalai Statkevich, who is currently in jail #1 in Minsk, has met with his lawyer and told him about his detention, reports the Telegram channel STATKEVICH.

On June 30, Mikalai Statkevich met with his lawyer, Uladzimir Sazanchuk. The meeting lasted about 10-15 minutes, but he managed to provide some details of his case.

The politician passed the words of gratitude to all people who support him. The Telegram channel quotes his words: “Honor, respect and appreciation to them”.

Now Statkevich is suspected of a crime provided for in Part. 1 Article 342 of the Criminal Code of Belarus. According to the charges, he, along with a group of people by prior conspiracy with Tsikhanouski, Aranovich, Sakau, Furmanau, Novikau and others, distributed the roles and coordinated actions, under the formal pretext of collecting signatures for Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya, organized an illegal rally, violating public order.

Statkevich has called the suspicion absurd. He says he did not commit any crime, and was last in Hrodna in autumn.

Statkevich also said that there were various provocations against him at the TDF, but he could not share the details.

Statkevich has been kept in pre-trial detention center #1 in Minsk since June 29. On June 30, he was recognized as a political prisoner by Belarusian human rights activists.
