Belarusians turn away from Russia

Is Belarus with Russia or with Europe? The public sentiment in our country is rapidly changing. But not in favor of friendship with the eastern neighbor. How many Belarusians are in favor of an alliance with Russia, and how many are oriented toward Europe is shown by the study conducted by the Belarusian Analytical Workshop.

The number of Belarusians supporting integration with Russia has decreased by 11 percentage points within a month. Meanwhile, pro-European sentiment has expanded. This is evidenced by a survey conducted by the Belarusian Analytical Workshop in early November. As many as 40% of Belarusians are in favor of an alliance with Russia, while 33% are for changing course towards Europe.

According to a sociologist, head of the Belarusian Analytical Workshop Andrei Vardamatski, the drop in pro-Russian sentiments in Belarusian society was a reaction to Moscow’s support for Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

“Two things happened here. The first is one and a half billion. And then there were quite different statements from the Russian official establishment, which supported the side of the Belarusian official establishment,” says Andrei Vardamatski.
