Belarusians to celebrate Independence for four days

We are in for a long weekend — June 30 and July 1-3.

This year, the official Independence Day is on Tuesday, so the working Monday 2 July is postponed until Saturday 7 July.

The decision to celebrate Independence Day on July 3 was taken at the republican referendum of 1996. Until then, the main state holiday was celebrated on July 27 — it was timed to coincide with the date of the signing of the BSSR Sovereignty Declaration by the BSSR Supreme Council in 1990.

The Belarusian opposition and its supporters believe that the independence of the state should be counted from the proclamation of the Belarusian People’s Republic on March 25, 1918.
