The novel coronavirus is on the decline and its virulence is not the same as before, President Alyaksandr Lukashenka said at Monday’s meeting with top officials.
According to him, the Belarusian city of Vitsebsk which used to be one of the focal points has one of the smallest number of new COVID-19 cases now while the coronavirus situation in Minsk ‘has plateaued’. Moreover, the Belarusian leader made mention of ‘good news’ he got from Mahiliou region.
In his opinion, only Brest region and Homiel region need to remain under strict as they might be the last to walk away from the epidemic.
At the same time, the head of state admitted his not being very optimistic.
“There are fewer severe cases. It seems, the virus has weakened, its virulence has decreased. God willing, it has. However, we should keep in mind the second wave. No one has yet proven that it will follow, but we need to stand ready. No one knows when it strikes. If in the autumn or winter, then I hope we will be prepared properly. Perhaps, this peril will pass by. Nevertheless, there is no relaxing yet,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Lukashenka.
As of May 25, the total of 37,144 coronavirus cases have been confirmed by Belarusian health professionals; 204 COVID-19 patients have passed away.
