Minsk: Activists punished for supporting political prisoners

Some activists detained before and after Tuesday’s picket Freedom To Political Prisoners have been tried on March, 1.

On February 26, the activists demanded release of political prisoners before the start of the European Games in Belarus. But some of them faced the deprivation of liberty themselves. Artsyom Charnyak and Volha Nikalaichyk were grabbed soon after the action of solidarity. Not everyone was able to join the picket: former political prisoner Pavel Sevyarynets, anarchists Nasta Huseva and Zmitser Paliyenka were preventively detained. Some days ago, Sevyarynets announced a campaign for Svyataslau Baranovich.

Pavel Sevyarynets, Leanid Kulakou, Maya Naumava and Volha Nikalaichyk spent almost three days in the predetention centre in Minsk. Only on Friday Sevyarynets was taken to Frunzenski district court, the other detained activists – to Tsentralny district court, human rights centre Viasna reports.

Sevyarynets, who called on Belarusians to participate in the picket on 26 February, was charged with violation of Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code. Judge Hanna Buynouskaya found the politician guilty and sentenced him to 10 days of arrest.

Kulakou, Naumava and Nikalaichyk got a fine of 1,147 Belarusian rubles (about $570) each.
