Nine people demand prisoners of conscience release in central Minsk

The activists went to the central square in Minsk to demand release of political prisoners before the start of the European Games in Belarus. It was the “Freedom to political prisoners!” forum that called for it. However, not everyone was able to join: some were preventively detained. If the authorities want shows or guests from Europe, they should let political prisoners go. Nine people urged exactly that.

“It is important to demonstrate support, to stand there with portraits so that people would see that we have political prisoners,” says Maksim Vinyarski from “European Belarus”.

Not all were able to come to the event. Co-chairman of the BCD Paval Sevyarynets was detained near his home.

“People should know that there is someone who goes to the square and demands freedom for political prisoners. After all, if we keep silent, everyone will be caught and put in jail,” civil activist Syarhei Tarasenka said.

Anarchists Anastasia Huseva and Zmitser Palienka are kept in the Zavadski police department. From the early morning the police came to the door of Zmitser, and Nastya received phone calls.

“This is an order of the authorities, they will not leave me alone. In any case, they will be coming over. They will make me or someone else come around – it does not matter,” a policeman explained Dzyanis Kuntsevich over the telephone, referring to an order from the KGB.

The formal reason for detention is photos with blank paper sheets against the background of the Zavadski police department. Later, young people drew pictures of slogans in Photoshop and put them on Facebook.
