Belsat journalist Lyubou Lunyova receives hefty fine


A Minsk court has fined journalist Lyubou Lunyova 30 basic units (about 310 USD) for allegedly participating in the action that the journalist covered. Lunyova strongly disagred with the court decision, since she did not take part in the action.

Lyubou Lunyova, together with cameraman Ivan Kurakevich, was detained on December 7 at the Wisdom March in Minsk. They were supposed to report from there, but almost immediately the journalists were detained. They were taken to the Savetskiy District Department of Internal Affairs, and then they were transported to Akrestsin Street jail.

Previously it was reported that a protocol was drawn up against journalists for participating in an unauthorized mass event for violating Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code.

Then the operator Ivan Kurakevich, who cooperates with Belsat, was sentenced to 15 days of arrest for allegedly participating in the mass event.

On December 8, it was reported that an ambulance took Lyubou Lunyova from the Center for Isolation of Offenders in Minsk to the cardiology unit of the 9th hospital in Minsk. After spending there two weeks she was discharged and a trial date was set.

The journalists of Belsat Katsyaryna Andreyeva and Darya Chultsova, who were detained for streaming from the Square of Changes, remain behind bars. A criminal case was opened against them.
