The Supreme Court in Minsk yesterday reviewed the cassation appeal of Iryna Slavikava. Thus, the judge upheld the sentence to 5 years in prison.
Iryna Slaunikawa was sentenced on August 3 by the District Court in Homiel. She was guilty of ‘organizing and preparing activities that seriously violated the social order, or actively participating in them’ (Article 342 of the Penal Code) and ‘forming or participating in an extremist group’ (Article 361.1 of the Penal Code).
Judge Mikalai Dola sentenced Iryna to five years of imprisonment in a penal colony. The trial was held behind closed doors, and its participants were bound by secrecy. So it has yet to be discovered what exactly the journalist was accused of.
Iryna is one of the 1,443 political prisoners of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime.
