Number of university students in Belarus down by more than third

Over the past 8 years, the number of students in Belarusian universities has decreased by more than 34%. While in 2011 there were 430 thousands of them, now the figure is 283 thousands.

The Education Minister Ihar Karpenka spoke about it on the air of Belarus 1. However, during this period, the number of future IT-specialists has increased. The minister added that admission to universities is carried out “to satisfy the needs of the national economy.”

Mr Karpenka also said that Belarus plans to change the format of school exams — they should become similar to the entrance exams.

“Today we have school exams of one kind, and the university entrance exams of another. Of course, this creates problems during the preparation stage. Thus, we will consider this issue,” he added.
