Minsk riot police detain anti-integration protest organizer

On December 26, riot policemen detained opposition politician Pavel Sevyarynets near the entrance to the block of flats he dwells in. Today’s detention might be of preventive nature.

The man was taken to Tsentralny district police department, his wife Volha Sevyarynets said on Facebook.

A few days earlier, Pavel Sevyarynets, a co-chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party and former political prisoner, called on Belarusians to gather at 12:00 on December, 29 in Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk and protest against deepening integration with Russia.

On December 18, Sevyarynets, who organized protests against the integration with Russia on December 7 and 8, was taken to court. Sevyarynets was sentenced to 15 days of arrest for unauthorized actions (part 3 of Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code), but for some reason he was released by the police. It is not ruled out that the authorities decided to make the politician serve the term now to prevent him from taking part in the upcoming rally.

Over the past month, four anti-integration rallies have taken place in Minsk. On December 20, about 1,600 persons took part in the protests.
