Vitaly Pisanets was one of the judges handling the murder case of Belarusian journalist Pavel Sheremet in July 2016. Pisanets considered a petition to extend the measure of restraint for the suspects in the case: Yulia Kuzmenko, Andrei Antonenko, and Yana Dugar.

According to hromadske.ua, citing its own sources, the deceased judge was drinking alcohol together with a representative of the National Police, Eugene Khomenko, and a military pensioner P. Onopenko. A quarrel broke out between Pisants and Khomenko, and a fight ensued. The judge slipped and fell on the floor. Khomenko and Onopenko called an ambulance, but Pisants could not be saved.

A criminal case was instigated for premeditated murder. The cause of death will be determined by expert examinations. The case is being handled by the Ukrainian State Bureau of Investigation.
