Minsk woman fined for curtains with Belarusian ornaments


Yuliya, a resident of Minsk, was recently detained for having white curtains with red ornaments on her apartment window. She spent the night in jail and was fined, reports TUT.by.

Yuliya had white curtains with a Belarusian ornament hanging in her apartment window on the 14th floor. On Sunday, May 2nd, the police came to her in the morning and said flags were hanging on the window.

“The officers entered the apartment, looked around, said that from below they looked like flags, so I have to go to the Soviet police department to give an explanation,” says the owner of the apartment.

The law enforcers removed the curtains. During the questioning at the police department, Yuliya realized she had been detained. It was written that the woman was picketing by placing a white-red-white flag on the balcony. She spent the night in the detention center.

On May 3rd, Judge of Savetski district Maryna Fyadarava found the Minsk resident guilty under part 1 of article 24.23 of the Administrative Code and fined her 80 basic units (2,320 rubles).

Yuliya says that the curtains had been hanging on the window for a long time.
