Cancer-stricken UN employee arrested for personal correspondence


Anastasiya Nestserava has been arrested twice for reposting “extremist” materials. The woman, an employee of the UN development program, has been behind bars since November 18, writes the human rights center Viasna. She was diagnosed with cancer.

The 49-year-old Anastasiya Nestserava, who works as a financial and administrative assistant in the UN Development Program in Belarus, was convicted twice in a row under Article 19.11 of the Administrative Code for keeping “extremist” materials. Anastasiya was detained on November 18 and arrested for ten days. Her husband was also imprisoned. He was sentenced to 15 days for “distributing information products included in the national list of extremist materials.” The security forces searched the houses of the spouses. They also seized the equipment.

On November 28, Anastasiya Nestserava was not released. On November 30, the judge of the Pervomaisky district, Maksim Trusevich, arrested the woman for another 15 days. The reason was a repost from the Zerkalo media outlet. There was launched a new administrative case.

Anastasiya Nestserava was diagnosed with cancer. She needs surgery.
