Ukraine pulls out of Eurovision Song Contest 2019

The National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine has refused to participate in the international music competition due to the “excessive politicization” of the national selection for Eurovision.

This year it was the singer MARUV (Anna Korsun)who won the national selection for Eurovision, but the National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine had complaints about her concerts in the aggressor country. The parties did not come to agreement, despite the fact that Korsun was ready to abandon the Russian tour.

The Company later appealed to the finalists, who came second and third in the national selection — the bands “Freedom Jazz” and “Kazka” — but they refused to participate in the competition.

The Company states that in this case they could have chosen any performer not from among the participants of the national selection, but decided not to take such a step, since they respect the choice of the audience in the national selection.

According to the press service of the public broadcaster, events around the selection for the current Eurovision have attracted the attention of society to the links of Ukrainian artists with show business in the territory of the aggressor state.

“In the 5th year of the military conflict, they are still very close. For a part of society, this fact is acceptable, the rest of the people feel outraged and reject it,” the press service of the company said.

The Company declares the need to start a public dialogue in order to resolve the situation around the cooperation of Ukrainian artists with Russian show business.

The laws of Ukraine do not limit the performances of artists in Russia.
