Thousands of people at spontaneous rally in Russia’s Volokolamsk


Residents of the Russian city Volokolamsk (Moscow region) are calling on the authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Protests against ‘Chernobyl landfill’ have been in progress for several months. About 6,000 people participated in a rally near the building of the local administration on Thursday, vedomosti.ru reports with reference to local activists.

The mayor of the city promised to meet their demand on March 30.

The locals insist on the elimination of the neighbouring Yadrovo landfill site which is poisoning the atmosfere with harmful discharge.

On March 21, dozens of children who complained of feeling unwell landed up in hospital.
