On May 16, unknown individuals kidnapped and murdered a road policeman. His body was found 2 km away from the Belarusian city of Mahiliou.
Lieutenant Yauhen Patapovich, 22, was abducted at about 18:30 after he had been called to the road traffic incident scene. According to preliminary information, kidnappers shot the policeman down using his service gun.
The regional police were put on the alert. As of 12.00 (Minsk time), the criminals have not been found.
According to law enforcers, the road policeman was driven away in a Volga car that had tinted windows and Russian number plates. The car was registered in Russia’s Smolensk or Tver Oblast (region 67 or 69), Belarusian news portal reports. Popular blogger Nexta says citing his own sources that the car is from region 98 (St. Petersburg); its formal owner is a Belarusian citizen residing in Smolensk Oblast.
Yauhen Patapovich was born in 1996. He graduated from Mahiliou-based Institute of the Interior Ministry.
“He always helped his mother and grandmother, he is the only child in the family. Yauhen was very modest, good, punctual, he was always eager to help out… he was a good man,” his friend Kiryl Milan said.
The Belarusian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case under Art. 362 (murder of a police officer on duty).
