Russian media outlet publishes false story about Belarus and NATO

The Russian media outlet Lenta.ru claims that during a recent visit to Washington Aleh Krauchanka, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus, allegedly offered to conduct NATO exercises in Belarus and to host American experts in social network research and Internet monitoring.

The story by Lenta.ru is most probably a false one. The outlet does not refer to any source. The article simply notes that Krauchanka made such an offer “according to some sources”. Lenta.ru adds that these testimonies are considered accurate by the “experts polled by Lenta. ru”. However, the names of the experts are not given.

This article by Lenta.ru article is devoted to the turn of Belarus to the West. It claims that Alyaksandr Lukashenka is tired of the Russian Federation and now wants to become an ally of the United States.

“For the Belarusian president it is very important to get an ally which is opposed to Russia. It is seen as a threat to the sovereignty of the country. The United States is perfectly suited for this role, since the crisis in Russian-American relations has only deepened since 2014,” the outlet writes.
