Number of registered alcoholics down in Belarus

The information was presented by Siarhey Asipchyk, deputy director of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Mental Health at a press conference in Minsk on 5 July.

According to him, there are currently officially registered 163,000 (previously 173-180 thousand) people with the alcohol dependence syndrome and 90,000 (formerly about 100 thousand) alcohol consumers “with negative consequences”.

“Since 2012-2013, the number of deaths and diseases caused by alcohol consumption has been continuously decreasing by approximately 5-7% per year,” said Siarhey Osipchyk.

According to the World Health Organization, this year Belarus ranked 27th in the world in terms of the amount of alcohol consumed per person. Until recently, Belarusians were in second place in this rating.
