Name of killed Belarusian journalist to be added to memorial of U.S. Newsmuseum

Pavel Sheremet is among the journalists to be featured on the memorial of the Newsmuseum in Washington.

On June 5, the Newseum will rededicate its Journalists Memorial, which recognizes men and women who died or were killed while reporting the news. The names of 14 journalists will be added to the memorial to represent all those who died in pursuit of the news in 2016.

Pavel Sheremet was killed by a bomb explosion in the center of Kyiv on July 20, 2016. The car itself belonged to Alena Prytula — owner of the “Ukrainian Truth” online media outlet. Ukrainian police have so far failed to establish the identity of the criminals who had killed the journalist.

Law enforcement bodies of Ukraine believe that Sheremet was killed for his professional activity. The Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said that the Russian special services may have been involved in the journalist’s death. Moscow called this version an act of “Russophobia.” Another version of Sheremet’s murder states that there may have been involved the volunteer soldiers of the “Azov” regiment.
