Minsk: Photo stand-in as tribute to Belarus police abuse

The photo stand-in ‘Police For People’ has appeared in Zybitskaya street in Minsk.

It was placed by representatives of Belarus’s anarchist movement. They wanted to unveil the ‘true essence of the law enforcement agencies in Belarus’. In the stand, one can see a riot policeman with a baton and taking a blank sheet of paper from a protester.

The aim of the action was clear – ‘anyone may become a victim of punitive agencies in Belarus’, anarchist artists stress.

As reported earlier, during May Day rallies in Brest and Baranavichy policemen detained protesters holding blank sheets of paper on which nothing was written. The activists were sentenced to days in arrests and fines.

N 2017, the notorious tax on ‘spongers’ caused a massive public outcry in the country. In February-March, protests were held in a number of Belarusian cities and towns. On March 21, the Belarusian leader said Decree Nr 3 would not be abolished or suspended. On March 25, Belarusians came to main squares of their cities to protest the ‘parasite’ law and celebrate the unofficial Freedom Day. But the Minsk riot police brutally dispersed the protest. Hundreds of people – even women, elderly people, journalists and ordinary passers-by – were arrested, battered and jailed.
