On May 18, Brest region region passed the 2nd European Games torch ‘The Flame of Peace’ to Hrodna region.
The city’s Lenin Square became the main venue for a big event. Famous Belarusian basketball player Ivan Yadeshka was the first to be given the honour to carry the torch; it is his shot that brought an Olympic gold medal to the Soviet team in 1972.
Ivan Tsikhan, a Belarusian hammer thrower and Olympic medalist, took over the flame from him.
Moreover, gymnast Alena Vauchetskaya, shooters Vitaly Bubnovich and Ihar Basinski, handball player Andrey Barbashynski, BSU rector Andrey Karol, singer Sasha Nemo and others took part in the event.
The 2nd European Games will be held in Minsk in June 21-30, 2019. For the first time it took place in 2015 in Baku; it was started rolling by Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s close friend, Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, who definitely wants it to run and run. However, holding the event may cost Belarusians $30-40 mln.
