Homiel: City of burning New Year trees?

Overnight into Sunday, the fire consumed the New Year tree set up in front of the railway station of the second largest city in Belarus. It is not the first time that a symbol of the New Year festivities has been lost to the flames.

A similar incident took place last week. A firecracket hit the inflatable Father Frost that was standing not far from a hypermarket in Homiel. The fairy-tale figure burnt, but firefighters managed to extinguish the fire before it spread to the New Year tree nearby.

Two years ago, the fires destroyed two New Year trees in Homiel. One was located next to the trolley bus depot, and the other was placed in the vicinity of the library named after Vladimir Lenin.
