On October 6, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has met with Belarusian opposition leader Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya. The meeting lasted 45 minutes.

Tsikhanouskaya informed the top German politician of the continuation of peaceful rallies and the situation of political prisoners in Belarus. According to her, now it is crucial that violence be stopped and prisoners of conscience be released, her Telegram channel reports.

“Svyatlana stressed that the protest in Belarus did not imply any fighting against Russia or Europe, it is nothing but a consequence of the domestic crisis in Belarus. And now the major goal of our people now is holding a new election. It is important that it take place in the near future, because the people have lived under pressure for 26 years. They do not intend to tolerate it anymore,” the TG post reads.

To overcome the crisis, the Belarusian people will need investment support, assistance to independent media and civil society organisations, she added.

Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya presented a white-red-white umbrella and a book The Country Called Belarus in the German language to Angela Merkel.

On October 7, the Belarusian politician is to meet with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
