Belarus news website Charter97 blocked in Russia

A Russian reader, who asked the authorities to shed light on the reasons for the troubled access to the website charter97.org in the country, has received an official response from the Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications (Roskomnadzor).

According to the watchdog, the IP address 18.197.98.191, where the Charter97.org is placed, is included in the special register of resources distributing information prohibited in the Russian Federation. Charter97 was added to the register at the request of the General Prosecutor’s Office dated April 16, 2018.

Since January, the website has been on the restricted access list in Belarus.

A decision to restrict access to the news resource was made on the ground of Article 511 of the law ‘On Mass Media’, the Belarusian Ministry of Information said. The article refers to the distribution of materials that are banned or restricted for distribution in accordance with the law or a court decision.

“For 20 years the authorities have been fighting us – they blocked our website, arrested and killed our journalists. We will defend the website Charter’97 by all means, including with the help of the international community,” Charter’97 editors promised.

The popular news website are famous for slamming Lukashenka regime and Russia’s hybrid war in Ukraine.
