33rd anniversary of Chernobyl disaster: Unauthorized event announced in Minsk

In spite of the lack of the Minsk authorities’ permission, the Greens party activists intend to gather together near the Academy of Sciences on April 26 at 18:00 . Belsat TV will be livestreaming the event.

“In light of the recent developments, the organizing committee cannot get people into trouble [calling them for participating in an unsanctioned rally], but as a citizen of the Republic of Belarus, I feel the need to come to the Academy of Sciences. Some politicians will join me. Then we are to go and lay flowers at the Chernobyl victims memorial chapel,” Zmitser Kuchuk, a deputy chairman of the Greens party, said.

As reported earlier, for he first time since 1989, the time-honoured Chernobyl Path march will not be held in Minsk. The organizing committee has withdrawn their application due to the city authorities’ demand to pay 5,737 Belarusian rubles (appr. $2,800) for the police services at the event. In addition, the organizers were expected to disburse 215 rubles to municipal workers and 240 – to paramedics.
