Poice detain villager who wrote letter to local newspaper about new Constitution


According to the Human Rights Center “Viasna,” on January 14th, Mikalay Vitsikau, a resident of Teryukha village (Homiel region) was detained.

His house was searched. Now the man is in the temporary detention center. Criminal proceedings for incitement of hatred may be initiated against him.

According to his relatives, the man’s troubles began after he sent a letter to the district newspaper “Mayak” about the discussion of the new Constitution. What exactly he wrote in the letter is unknown.

The draft of the new Constitution was published on December 27, 2021. The document provides for the transfer of huge powers to the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly and should provide Alyaksandr Lukashenka with personal security guarantees in case he decides to step down as president. The authorities urged Belarusians to actively join the discussion of the new Constitution.
