11-year compulsory schooling to be introduced in Belarus


11 years of secondary education may become compulsory for Belarusian schoolers, Education Minister Ihar Karpenka said in an interview to the state-run TV channel ONT.

At the moment, 9-year basic schooling is obligatory for every Belarusian.

“We are switching to universal secondary education, 11 grades will be compulsory,” the minister said.

The improvement has been included in a new edition of the Education Code, which the newsly-formed parliament will be considering after the upcoming elections, Karpenka stressed.

Ihar Karpenka announced the plans as far back as 2017.
