In his last post on Facebook Babchenko recalled that in 2014, four years ago, he had not been taken on board and a bit later the helicopter had been shot down by militants in Donbas.

“Fourteen people were killed. And I was lucky. This day turns out to be my second birthday,” he wrote today.

Arkady Babchenko was born in 1977. He participated in the first and second Chechen wars. In the early 2000s, he took up journalism, he contributed to the Novaya Gazeta. Being a war correspondent, he coveried the conflicts in South Ossetia (2008) and Donbas (2014).

Due to his anti-Putin stance and publications, he repeatedly received personal threats. In 2017, he left Russia for Kyiv, where he worked for TV station ATR.

This is the second high profile murder of a journalist in Ukraine since Pavel Sheremet was killed in an explosion in Kyiv in 2016. Anton Gerashchenko, an MP and former adviser to the Interior Minister, believes that the ‘actions of Russian secret services’ will be one of the versions of the tragedy.
