Russia's envoy: West unable to tear Belarus from Russia

This opinion was voiced by the Russian ambassador to Belarus in an interview with “Sputnik” on the occasion of the Day of Unity of Peoples of Belarus and Russia. He expressed concern over NATO military exercises near the border with Belarus.

“All the actions of the West in the Ukrainian flank, Belarusian one, are anti-Russian by nature. And we understand that the next efforts will be directed at Belarus, and they have already been. You can see how different delegations frequent this place. We are watching this, but we understand that now the West is unable to tear Belarus from Russia. And Belarus is not ready to jump into the arms of the West, to sever all economic ties. There is the example of Ukraine, there is the example of Moldova. But it causes some concern, and we are working in this direction,” said the diplomat.

Mr Surikov commented on the oil and gas conflict. According to the diplomat, the compromise in the oil and gas dispute will be achieved in any case.

He also commented on the protest wave in Belarus.

“In Russia, as I understand, the election campaign of the President of the Russian Federation will soon start, and someone wants to promote themselves on the subject the authorities are working on… In Belarus, the situation is somewhat different. Here the opposition used the authorities’mistakes regarding the adoption of a law, which is quite seriously restricting the rights of some society members. It is necessary to find out who deliberately does not want to work. That’s what did not happen. Secondly, the decision was taken without a proper public discussion… ” said the Russian official.
