The Pentagon urged calm over Vladimir Putin’s recent statement about an arsenal of nuclear weapons that will significantly boost the Kremlin’s military capabilities.
“We are not surprised by the statement. And the American people should rest assured that we are fully prepared,” Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White told reporters when asked about the new ‘invincible’ weapons mentioned.
Russia’s weapons had long been in development and were known to the U.S, the Pentagon officials stated.
According to a White House representative, Putin confirmed what the U.S. has already known, i.e. Russia has been developing ‘destabilizing weapons systems for over a decade in direct violations of its treaty obligations’. President Donald Trump understands the threats and that America is ‘moving forward to modernize our nuclear arsenal and ensure our capabilities are unmatched’, Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.
In his annual state-of-the-nation speech, Putin unveiled the list of their new strategic weapons. In particular, he claimed that Moscow had developed cruise missiles with ‘practically unlimited range’. Russia had to build them to counter the potential threat posed by the U.S. missile defense system, the president explained.
“No one has listened to us. You will listen to us from now. One has failed to bring Russia down,” he said.
