President okays transition to secondary education in Latvian

Latvia’s president Raimonds Vejonis has endorsed amendments to the Education Act, which allows the transition to Latvian as the only language of instruction in secondary schools.

“Secondary school education in the Latvian language will ensure equal opportunities for all young people to get good education and make a living in Latvia, to study and work here. This will result in a more consolidated society and a stronger country,” Vejonis said.

Amendments to the law does not provide for the abolition of the Russian language in primary school. The transition to the dominant ethnic group language will be carried out gradually and be completed in the 2021/2022 academic year.
