No Freedom Day as long as Lukashenka is in power

During Tuesday’s meeting with representatives of state-run media, Alyaksandr Lukashenka also answered a number of questions put by Internet users.

When asked about Belarus unofficial Freedom Day, March 25, Lukashenka promised that it would not become the Independence Day as long as he was president.

Belarus does have its independence Day – July 3 [the day of liberation of Minsk from Nazi invaders – belsat], he reminded.

“If we had failed to win, there would be no independence at all,” Lukashenka said.

The Belarusian leader said that as a historian, he studied the issue. According to him, Belarusians have yet to understand what the Belarusian People’s Republic was and what role it played in the history of the country. Lukashenka admitted that the founders of the Belarusian People’s Republic did strive for establishing an independent country, but he blamed them for seeking Germany’s assistance.

March 25, 2018 was be the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the Belarusian People’s Republic (BNR). It came into existence at the end of the First World War, when Bolshevik forces left Minsk and the city was occupied by German troops. On March 25, 1918 the Provisional Government (Rada) proclaimed the independence of the BNR. After the Red Army re-entered Minsk, the Communist government replaced the Rada; its members had to emigrate. For many years, Lukashenka regime has been slamming and even persecuting those who pay the tribute to the BNR.
