By various estimates, up to 100,000 participants showed up at the march in the Belarusian capital. At least 177 persons were detained in Minsk on Sunday; 74 – in the regions, human rights centre Viasna reports. The list of detainees is being updated.

Protests against the results of the presidential election have been going on in Belarus. They are often accompanied by brutal detentions, and during the first days of 9 to 12 August detainees testified to various forms of torture.

Over the past weeks, Minsk has been facing the most large-scale rallies and pickets in its history. Lots of its residents leave their homes in bedroom communities and march to the centre of the city. According to Belarusian human rights activists, nearly 12,000 people have been detained since August, 9.
