Civil activist Valyantsin Trotski was detained on Sunday evening in Minsk, Telegram channel A Country for Living reports.
The police officers stopped him near Grekau Park in Serabranka residential area. It is still unknown which police station Trotski was taken to and what he is accused of. Previously, he had repeatedly served terms of administrative arrest for his political activity.
In this year’s election campaig, Valyantsin Trotski, an activist of the People’s Hramada part, has become an agent at the election office of presidential candidate Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the wife of imprisoned blogger Syarhei Tsikhanouski.
The 2020 presidential voting is to take place on August, 9. Since the beginning of the election campaign, incumbent president Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s would be rival Viktar Babaryka, might-have been opponent Syarhei Tsikhanouski, politicians Mikalai Statkevich and Pavel Sevyarynets, as well as dozens of people have been placed into custody. In late June, the Belarusian Interior Ministry also launched a probe into ‘illegal activities’ in which presidential hopeful Valery Tsapkala was allegedly involved.
According to human rights centre Viasna, there are 24 political prisoners in Belarus.
