Minsk activist protests against Belarus Interior Ministry’s double standards

Activist Pyotr Markelau came to the building of the Belarusian Interior Ministry holding the poster Block 86.57.250.202 and had his picture taken.

The number is the IP address of the ministerial website.

“At the initiative of the Ministry of Interior, our website legalize.by was blocked for alleged promotion of the use of marijuana. After that, three websites that belong to me stopped working. They have blocked a whole server with more than 300 websites without any reason! At the same time, the ministry allows itself to issue the statements which give rise to violence against LGBTQ. I am opposed to any restrictions or censorship on the Internet, but in this context, the blocking of the Interior Ministry website would be consistent and logical,” The Village of Belarus quotes the activist.

A week ago, Pyotr Markelau received a letter from the Ministry of Information letting him know that access to the legalize.by website in the territory of Belarus would be limited. The official reason for the blocking was the desire to prevent access to the materials, which, according to the ministry, promote the use of marijuana.

Meanwhile, in its recent statement, the Belarusian Ministry expressed resentment over the fact that the British Embassy in Minsk displayed a rainbow flag, a symbol of the LGBT community, on May 17. British diplomats made such a move to draw public attention to LGBT people and the discrimination they face. The ministry’s controversial stance has not gone unnoticed by foreign media.

“We are for true-life things, and they [LGBT] shall not pass!” the official statement said. The top officials called same-sex marriages and affairs ‘fake’.

‘Legalize Belarus’ activists are in favour of decriminalising the circulation of controlled substances in small quantities and against severe penalties under Article 328 of the Criminal Code. Since December 2017, activists have held a number of street actions in support of decriminalisation. Every such action resulted for them in administrative persecution.
