Mahiliou: Student kicked out of university after refusal to cooperate with KGB


Zmitser Yarmolenka, a 21-year-old part-time student, was dismissed from the faculty of law at Mahiliou State University. Before the expulsion he had spent 6 months in Austria as a volunteer.

When Zmitser returned to Belarus, Mahiliou department of the Committee for State Security (KGB) made several attempts to recruit him. The chekists were especially interested in the student’s contacts with foreign volunteers, but Zmitser refused to cooperate with the KGB and told the story to human rights defenders and journalists. Soon after he face trouble taking exams at the university. It is the Dean of the faculty who played a main part in withdrawing Zmitser: he graded the student’s last exam and re-examination.
