Lukashenka promises support for pro-independence candidates

Authorities will develop a set of criteria according to which the state will support candidates regardless of their political views and preferences, said the head of Belarus Alyaksandr Lukashenka on May 24 at a meeting on preparations for elections to the House of Representatives and the Council of 6-th convocation of the National Assembly.

According to Lukashenka, there will be developed approximately 10 criteria. In particular, potential members must adhere to the principles of independence. “No one would dispute that one of the criteria for the selection of the future candidate for parliament must be a matter of independence of our state,” Lukashenka’s press service quoted him.

In addition, the deputy candidates must advocate the well-being of the population “without obscure radical shock reforms”. “It is necessary to help such candidates. If they need support – it will be necessary to support them, irrespective of their political affiliations. The main thing is for them to be honest and decent people,” said Lukashenka.

He again demanded that the parliamentary was “orderly and peaceful” and expressed his views on the coverage of elections by the media, which is that “there should be no secrets for anyone.”
