Lithuanian customs officers detain Belarusian smuggler

Lithuanians have detained a Belarusian driver near the town of Panevezys. The DAF truck was traveling from Latvia. At the entrance to the city, the police tried to stop it for inspection. However, the driver did not obey the police and they had to chase after him. After 6 kilometers the truck was blocked.

A passenger from the truck jumped out and disappeared. The second man – the driver – got detained by customs officers. He happened to be a citizen of Belarus.

According to the documents of the driver, he was allegedly driving a truck of rubber from Russia to Portugal. However, instead of rubber, the semi-trailer was filled with cigarettes, which were not even camouflaged.

In total, customs officers found 400 thousand packs of cigarettes ‘American Legend’ without wrappers. The cost of illegal cargo with mandatory tax is €964 thousand.

Cigarettes of this brand were detained in Lithuania for the first time. ‘American Legend’ is produced in Greece, but there are suspicions that it may be a fake.
