Fight on air: Two Russian journalists quarrel over Stalin’s role in history

TV journalist and historian Nikolai Svanidze and Kavpolit сhief editor Maxim Shevchenko were invited to the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio studio to discuss the topic ‘Is Stalinism a disease that should be treated?’ The discussion was so spirited that the opponents came to blows.

The journalists staged a fight at the end of the talk:

Shevchenko: The Soviet Union fought [against Nazis], and you spit upon its grave. We won due to Stalin’s leadership!

Svanidze: You are lying. I do not spit on the grave!

Shevchenko: The French surrendered and became allies of the Germans, but our officers fought. We were the only country that rebuffed Nazi invaders!

Svanidze: Yes, thanks to the heroism of the Soviet people we did fight, but we lost almost 30 mln people.

In response, Shevchenko called Svanidze a ‘f*cked demagogue’.

Svanidze: If you say that I spit upon their graves, you are all-round jerk. If you were closer, I would punch you in the face.

Shevchenko: You are welcome – I am here, hit me, sissy!

After these words, Svanidze stood up and gave Shevchenko a slap.

Nikolai Svanidze and Maxim Shevchenko are members of the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights.
