Ex-leaders of Polish energy firm detained 'for unprofitable contract with Belarus'

The Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CAB) of Poland has detained two former members of the ‘Enea SA’ energy company management.

They are being accused by investigators of acquiring an energy line between Poland and Belarus, which is unprofitable for the company.

Piotr Kaczorek from the Public Relations Department of the Central Bank has confirmed the detention of Maksymilian G. and Krzysztof Z. According to investigators, the acquisition of an energy bridge, which occurred in August 2011, brought 15 million zlotys (about $ 4 million) in losses.

“The acquisition was carried out by a company registered in a tax offshore in Cyprus. At the same time, it created an appearance of a transaction beneficial to the enterprise. It was connected with the creation of an energy bridge, which was supposed to promote the export and transit of energy through the Belarus system to the Polish and EU markets,” Piotr Kaczorek noted.

At the same time, the line did not have sufficient capacity, technical and financial analysis of the transaction were not carried out, investigators believe.

The former vice-presidents are accused of failing to fulfill their obligations and working for the benefit of others.
