BPF Youth activist forced to pay contributions to State Youth Union

Head of the regional office of the Belarusian Popular Front Youth, Dzyanis Mandzik, who is in his freshman year of the Belarusian State Technological University, is being forced to pay contributions to the State Youth Union. If he doesn’t, his colleagues may not be allowed to settle in a dormitory.

Dzyanis Mandzik told Belsat that he had been automatically made a member of the State Young Union as early as in the 8th school grade, and he did not even know it. When the activist entered the university, he refused to pay the contributions and felt the pressure over it.

“The local BRYU secretary said that if I do not pay contributions, none of our study group will get a place in the dormitory (21 April is the deadline for applying for dormitory). I do not know if they can do so, but they want my groupmates to influence me. His groupmates now tell me that I should do everything for them to get into the dorm,” said Dzyanis.

The activist would not pay contributions. Dzyanis is also not allowed to leave the BRYU:

“I am told that, supposedly, leaving the Belarusian Republican Youth Union before the age of 33 is impossible.”
