Belarusian surgeons perform four complex heart surgeries

At the Belarusian Scientific and Practical Centre, medics have performed four Ross procedures, which are becoming less frequently performed all over the world than a heart transplant, reports the Ministry of Health.

According to the director of the center, Kanstantsin Drazdousky, children with the most complex pathologies, which require immediate operation, were invited. The operations were performed with the direct participation of one of the most famous and experienced cardiac surgeons in the world, Professor Afksendiyos Kalangos, president of the Calangos Foundation in Switzerland.

The Ross procedure is very complex and requires enormous surgical experience.

“In Europe and the USA, there are several special centers that perform operations of this complexity. I am very glad that Dr. Drazdousky and I are starting a programme to perform The Ross procedure in Belarus. I was impressed by the work of Dr. Drazdousky and his colleagues,” said Dr. Kalangos.

The operations consisted of several parts, the doctors had to stop the heart of every child. Success largely depends on how anesthesia is performed, artificial blood circulation, care in the intensive care unit.

A similar operation in Belarus was performed on an 11-month-old child about 10 years ago. At that time, American colleagues provided assistance. The second operation was urgently performed on a Belarusian child in June 2019.
