Belarusian opposition activist tried for non-existent event

On Wednesday, July 11, the Maladzechna district court heard the administrative case against the member of the Seym of the Belarusian Popular Front party Volha Lahvinovich, who was charged with participating in an unsanctioned mass rally “Astravetsky Shliakh” on May 26 in Zaslaul, the press service of the Belarusian Popular Front party reports.

The peculiarity of the case heard by the court was that there was practically no mass action on May 26 in Zaslaul — the organizers submitted an application to the local authorities for holding a rally dedicated to the aftermath of the Charnobyl nuclear power plant accident and threats related to the construction of the Astravets nuclear power plant. However, local authorities did not give permission for the action.

Thus, the action consisted of visiting memorable places of the city with stories about the history of Zaslaul and a round table on nuclear issues. In total, about two dozen politicians and social activists were involved. However, the police still drafted protocols for “violating the order of organizing or holding mass events” in accordance with Article 23.34 of the Code of Administrative Offenses against participants of the round table: Volha Lahvinovich, Yana Lahvinovich, Ihar Lyalkou, Vyachaslau Siuchyk, Maryna Naidzich, Dzmitry Kuchuk.

The district court found the member of the Belarusian Popular Front party Volha Lahvinovich guilty of violating the procedure for holding mass actions and gave her an administrative penalty in the form of a warning.
