Several top officials have been recently detained in the country, Valery Vakulchyk, Head of the Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB), told journalists on Thursday.

“The case is bribes amounting to tens of thousands of US dollars,” he said.

According to him, the biggest bribe taken was about $140,000, but there might have been even larger sums of money involved.

The Committee will give further details of the high-profile detentions and facts of corruption practices within 10 days, Vakulchyk added.

As reported earlier, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka promised that corrupt officials would taste ‘hard punishment’ in Belarus.

“Be careful, guys. Being a poor person at liberty is better than being a rich prisoner,” he warned.

In late May, the KGB arrested Syarhei Rauneyka, a presidential aide and state inspector in Hrodna region, when he was reportedly receiving a bribe of $200,000.
