Belarus receives $2 mln cancer drugs from US charity organisation

The U.S. charity organisation CitiHope International has delivered the first batch of medicines to treat cancer and rare genetic diseases to Belarus.

The medicines estimated at over $2.25 mln were provided free of charge as part of a humanitarian project, state-run news agency BelTA reports. The list of drugs had been earlier agreed on with the Belarusian Health Ministry. This foreign aid is exempt from taxes and customs duties.

The medicines were provided in line with the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the the Humanitarian Affairs Department of the Belarus President Property Management Directorate and CitiHope International in Washington in November 2018. The document provides for sending medications to the tune of $5 million as gratuitous humanitarian aid to Belarus.

In 2018, US charity organisations handed over medicines worth $1.9 mln to Belarusian healthcare institutions.

Belarus had been cooperating with CitiHope International till 2014. After a four-year setback, the contacts were resumed in 2018.
