Belarus declares two British diplomats persona non grata

British Military Attaché Timothy Wight-Boycott and Deputy Ambassador Lisa Thumwood have been declared non grata by the Belarusian authorities, the ONT TV channel reports.

The ONT channel accused the British diplomats of sitting for a long time in a cafe on Victory Avenue during yesterday’s protest. The diplomats were allegedly “gathering information about the domestic political situation in Belarus and the course of the protests.”

ONT claims that since May 2020 diplomats have met with representatives of opposition and public human rights organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations. Military Attaché Timothy Wight-Boycott also visited the regions several times for the same purpose. Apparently, in July the Belarusian Foreign Ministry had already issued a warning to him, but it was ignored.

As for the British Deputy Ambassador Lisa Thumwood, she is accused of allegedly “coordinating the work of the journalists of the Brussels BBC bureau who came to Belarus to cover the work of the Tsikhanouskaya election headquarters, as well as the protests.

British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab called the decision of the Belarusian authorities “absolutely groundless”.
