U.S. considers new sanctions against Belarus, affecting oil sector and fertilizers

Joe Biden’s administration is considering imposing new sanctions against Belarus, which are likely to affect the oil sector, as well as supplies of potash fertilizers, reports the news agency TASS, citing an article published in The Wall Street Journal on Sunday, July 25.

The topic of possible sanctions was discussed at a meeting between Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya and U.S. officials. As Franak Vyachorka, Tsikhanouskaya’s advisor told The Wall Street Journal, State Department representatives made it clear that they were going to impose new restrictive measures against “the potash and oil sectors of Belarus.” It was not specified when it would happen.

After the meeting between Tsikhanouskaya and Assistant to the President for National Security Jake Sullivan, the press service of the White House issued a statement, saying that the United States would continue to hold the Belarusian authorities “accountable for their actions,” including through sanctions.
